✗ Hannibal was born in the time of Knights and Kings. Of honor by your sword and feuding kingdoms. He was privileged to be born to a family of knighthood that closely served the current king of their region. Growing up the boy had many luxuries and from an early age was taught how to be a master of swords. He had a natural talent at it and his father often boasted he would be a fine knight.

✗ When Hannibal was sixteen he became romantically involved with the family's stableboy, Giovanni, who was of an age close to his own. He knew that he shouldn't like another male the way he did, let alone someone of such low ranking in society, but he couldn't help himself. The women he met were of little interest to him and even more so sexually. The secret affairs he had Giovanni had in the middle of the night were things Hannibal cherished, looked forward to, and would never trade for the world. He loved men, he loved Giovanni, and he knew it.

As he entered full adulthood and became a knight like his father Hannibal and Giovanni still kept up their love affair in secrecy. Hannibal wanted nothing more than to make a comfortable life with Gio but he knew it was impossible without dishonoring himself and his family. If not something worse. All he could do was try to make Giovanni's life more comfortable and to sneak away to spend nights with him as often as he could. It was a miracle that no one had caught on to them, as smitten as the men were with each other.

Except, perhaps, the Grim Reaper. As illness plagued their lands and their people, Giovanni was one of the many to become ill. And in horror and indescribable sorrow Hannibal had to watch the love of his life slip from his hands. The knight never recovered from his loss, a shell of the man he once was.

✗ As Hannibal quietly mourned the loss of his love all his family saw was the the man become hollow and distant for unexplained reasons. Worried that his bachelor life was getting to him they pushed for him to wed the daughter of another nobleman. Too depressed to fight his family on it he agreed, now wed to a woman. And shortly after she gave birth to a daughter. Hannibal did very little with his family, holding no love for them and too empty to even try to pretend. The only person to ever be in his heart was Giovanni. So often he kept himself away from home, busy with his work and service to the lord. By the time he died his daughter was ten and he hardly knew anything about her.

✗ In the afterlife Hannibal wandered around aimlessly unsure what he wanted to do with his new life. Eventually he found himself part of the circus, learning how to juggle and throw knives for the entertainment of other people. He as well, trying to expand his usefulness and acts, began to work with the circus' big cats and became one of their trainers. Sometimes he will do performances with them but his main act is still knives. One of the lions, Reinhard, has become quite attached to the man and become like his pet. An over-sized house cat, if you will.
