Ivan Chernikov was born in Moscow, Russia, to two fairly wealthy parents. His mother was a popular writer, while his father was the CEO of an oil company. He had a good education, wherein he excelled at his studies. He particularly loved studying languages, and was quite fluent in German, French, English, and Polish. Later on during his studies, he picked up Chinese, Arabic, and Italian.

When he was thirteen years old, his parents decided to move to the United States of America. He, naturally, came with them. At first, adjusting to living in a different culture was difficult, and he was initially unimpressed with the country he would apparently have to live in for the remainder of his life. Increasing his inner-conflict was the birth of a sibling, his sister. She would never know Russia, and would never know what it was to grow up in Russia.

While Ivan still holds a resentment for America, finding it to be not as noble as his beloved Russia, he has managed to make a name for himself. Near the end of his senior year at high school, he decided he wanted to join law enforcement, specifically the FBI. At university, he majored in Psychology, with Applied Behavioural Analysis. He also studied philosophy, criminology, and languages, subjects which he enjoyed. After obtaining a job as a clinical psychologist, which he kept for several years, he was able to apply to the FBI.

A thorough investigation followed, after which he received permission to send in an application. He was able to ascend to the Behavioural Analysis Unit, the job he had wanted in the first place. He quickly became involved with his occupation to the point of obsession. It was easy for Ivan to forgo sleeping to solve a case, analyze a criminal, do something that he enjoyed.

He was killed on the job. The criminal his unit had been apprehending had had an assistant, someone the team had failed to detect. Ivan was shot in the head; he died instantly.

During his service in the BAU, Ivan became addicted to morphine. He'd been injured and had had morphine administered to him at the hospital. That was his first taste of the drug, and he simply couldn't stop taking it afterward. This was a fact that was well hidden, and he made numerous attempts to rehabilitate himself. Following his death, he finds that he is no longer dependent on morphine; however, he has a strong aversion to hospitals due to his fear of somehow becoming addicted again.

He has a slight Russian accent (in particular, he rolls his rs) which becomes stronger when he is flustered or angry. He also has a tendency to clasp his hands together or wring his wrists when nervous. It's easy for him to become addicted, involved, or obsessed with something.

He hasn't been dead very long. Perhaps a year at the most. Upon overhearing that the Underworld held a law enforcement team, he decided to apply, despite being a human being. His physical strength, intelligence, and prowess in psychology gave him several advantages, and it was decided that he would be beneficial to the law team.
